Is Carrie Bradshaw the True Villain of Sex and the City?
Girls, I know I'm so late to the party, but I've only started watching Sex and the City (SATC—the series) this year. To be fair, the first season aired on June 6, 1998. I was only four months old back then, so keeping up with Carrie Bradshaw in real time would have been impossible. To remedy my lack of knowledge, I'm making my way through the show slowly, and now I'm on season 4.
When I first watched SATC, I quite liked Mr. Big—well, "like" is a strong word; what I mean is more like "I quite tolerated Mr. Big". As the season went on, I realized something shocking... "Is Carrie Bradshaw the real problem all along?" I mean, she's not someone I want to be best friends with. But I love her wardrobes (and shoes!!!). With that said, why don't I take a solo vote to test my hypothesis? I figure this will be an interesting experiment.
Disclaimer: I know it's been more than 20 years since the last season came out, but I still need to warn you that there are going to be spoilers ahead (and they are going to be MAJOR!!!). If you haven't watched it yet, beware.
- No matter what goes down, Carrie always runs back back to Big. I’m not judging her—okay, maybe just a bit—but seeing her constantly go back to that man is really tiring. Carrie, please, he’s just not that into you…
Is Carrie the problem here? Yes.
1 vs 0 - Carrie and Miranda fight in Season 3 Episode 18. Well, long story short, Miranda is opposed to Carrie’s decision to have “lunch” with Big. I don’t care if Miranda's speech sounds mean, but props to Miranda for finally saying what I desperately wanted to! Carrie needs a reality check. And what she says to Miranda is SO NOT FAIR!
Is Carrie the problem here? Yes.
2 vs 0 - Carrie uses personal anecdotes to write her columns. As a fellow blogger (though I do it unprofessionally), I respect that.
Is Carrie the problem here? No.
2 vs 1 - How Carrie acts during Big and Natasha’s wedding is quite a girl-boss move. “Then I had a thought… maybe I didn’t break Big. Maybe the problem was he couldn’t break me. Maybe some women aren’t meant to be tamed. Maybe they need to run free until they find someone just as wild to run with.” You go, girl!
Is Carrie the problem here? No.
2 vs 2 - When Carrie cheats on Aidan with Big. No further explanation is needed.
Is Carrie the problem here? Yes.
3 vs 2 - Go Charlotte when she says that Carrie doesn’t think about Natasha if she finds out about the affair—she only thinks about what it will make her if Natasha ever finds out. As a response, Carrie insists she’s not the other woman and refuses to believe that she's “that woman”. Wow, the audacity.
Is Carrie the problem here? Yes.
4 vs 2 - I think it’s so not fair for Carrie to insist on meeting Natasha after the divorce. You are the other woman, Carrie. Natasha has the right to decline meeting you, especially after you slept with her husband in their apartment and caused her to break her front teeth!
Is Carrie the problem here? Yes.
5 vs 2 - When Carrie sends Aidan to help Miranda in Season 4 Episode 7 after telling her that she’s coming. I mean, Miranda hurts her neck and is lying naked in the bathroom waiting for her best friend to help. Carrie’s decision to send Aidan without informing Miranda is such a shitty move.
Is Carrie the problem here? Yes.
6 vs 2 - When Carrie genuinely tries to be Big’s friend. Well, it’s not fair to Aidan, but for the first time in so long she stops trying to get back together with Big and that’s refreshing.
Is Carrie the problem here? Well, a generous no, I guess?
6 vs 3
