Christmas in the City: Where to Dine and Celebrate in Jakarta
Christmas, just like in the movies, brings out that special festive feeling, especially when you’re spending it with your family and friends. I, for one, love celebrating Christmas early, and this year is no different! From enjoying cozy, classic dining to singing karaoke at a restaurant, this year’s celebrations have been both indulgent and fulfilling. If you live in Jakarta or nearby and are looking for places to celebrate 'tis the season, may this short list of charming spots inspire you...
On December 8th, I celebrated my first Christmas gathering of the season with some friends from church. We booked a private room at House 89 Restaurant & Cafe and enjoyed their Indonesian set menu, served buffet-style. For dessert, we had a traditional dish called Es Selendang Mayang, which tasted really good.
Oh, and I almost forgot—the private room came with a karaoke set! What a fun surprise!
My high school friends and I dined at Silk Bistro two weeks ago. The place was full of vintage charm, making it a wonderful dining experience. There was a spacious outdoor area in the back, perfect for taking Instagram-worthy shots. I ordered a plate of Truffle Black Pepper Noodle with smoked pork bacon, sliced pork neck, parmesan, and egg sauce, along with a glass of iced lemon tea. I was famished, so my dish tasted exquisite, although most of my friends agreed that the Char Kway Teow was the best.
As the bistro was packed, we continued our gift exchange session in the garden. Our theme this year was ‘makeup products’. I got a lip product from Rom&nd.
After dining at Silk Bistro, my friends and I decided to continue our little night outing in a café called Greyhound. With its great live music, a cozy setting, and a beautiful Christmas tree, our night became even more magnificent. Without quite knowing how, we suddenly opened up and shared our secrets with each other. I mean, the atmosphere felt just right, and Christmas isn't Christmas without warming up with new familiar faces, don't you think? I hope you get it.
Two of my friends and I then shared a slice of coconut crepe cake. It’s definitely one of the prettiest and most delicious cakes I’ve ever tasted in my entire life.
Last week, my department at the office decided to hold a Christmas buffet lunch celebration. It might not have been my most favorite buffet—the selection wasn't as varied as I'd hoped—but it was still great overall. I genuinely loved the décor and the atmosphere. It was so cozy and festive!
