Six Days of Crocheting: Still Learning, Still Tangled

Six days into learning crochet, I can now say that crocheting isn’t exactly difficult, but it’s definitely tricky.

After learning how to make chains with more even tension, I moved on to actual patterns. (Apparently, a common beginner mistake is making chains too tight—which I totally did on day one. But hey, I think I’ve gotten much better now.)

On day four, I learned how to make a single crochet (SC).

SC honestly felt like a breath of fresh air. Once my hands got used to holding the hook and yarn, it just… clicked. Pulling the yarn in and out to make SC felt surprisingly natural.

But of course, I was too quick to assume the rest would be just as easy.

Feeling confident, I tried half double crochet (HDC) the next day, thinking, “The rest can’t be that hard, right?” Little did I know that SC was just the very beginning. HDC required pulling the yarn through three loops—and that’s where I lost it.

(It’s not that I was making the wrong stitch. I just kept accidentally pulling extra loops along with the yarn, which completely threw me off.)

So no, I haven’t mastered HDC yet. Still learning, still trying. Wish me all the crocheting power in the world.

On day five, I decided to power through and learn two more stitches: double crochet (DC) and treble crochet (TC).

DC was surprisingly easy. There were still three loops to pull through, but you do it two at a time—what a time to be alive. TC, though? Don’t even ask. There were four loops. FOUR LOOPS. Even though I still had to pull through two at a time like DC, I kept messing up. Most of the time, I either grabbed an extra stitch or completely lost track of which loop to pull through next.

Girl, it was so confusing. (At this point, I think Charli XCX should release a song called Crocheting, So Confusing. I would absolutely host a listening party here in Jakarta.)

I also found out today why my stitches kept curling like in the cover photo of this post: turns out my foundation chain was too tight. People on TikTok recommend using a hook one or two sizes bigger for the foundation chain.

Since I don’t have a bigger hook, I’ll just try to keep it looser next time. I’ll update you again soon. Let’s see how this new hobby goes.

P.S. I used this tutorial video on YouTube. It’s in Indonesian but super easy to follow!
