July's Good Watch (My Boyfriend's the Movie Nerd, I'm Just Here for the Vibes)
My boyfriend is a huge movie nerd. Every time he asks me to watch a movie with him, he looks as excited as a puppy with a new toy. And who can say no to a puppy with a new toy, even if you’re not a big fan of animals? His boyish enthusiasm is infectious, and it makes me want to squeeze both his cheeks lovingly.
While my boyfriend is into movies, I’m quite the opposite. I may enjoy a good movie now and then, but rushing to the cinema to catch a hyped-up film has never been a priority in my life. I’d say I’m more of a seasonal moviegoer. If I’m curious but too lazy to sit through something for two hours, I’ll just open Wikipedia and read the whole synopsis there.
Yes, I am that person. I am Wikipedia’s exact target market.
However, there’s a slightly different tone in the air now. I’ve only been dating my boyfriend for under a year, but I’ve already watched almost as many movies with him as I did in my entire life before dating. I may not be a movie geek yet, but I’ve slowly come to appreciate the excitement of going to the cinema and watching the hottest topic in town. Movie dates are now one of my favorite things.
With that said, July has been an exciting month for both my boyfriend and me. So many good movies were released this month, and we were lucky to watch four of them:
Jurassic World Rebirth. I appreciate how realistic and cool the dinosaurs look here. The reptile-lover that is my boyfriend (as we like to joke) excitedly pointed out the different types of dinosaurs that make an appearance—and there are quite a few! The plot, however, feels a bit too fast-paced for my liking, which leaves some questions unanswered. It was still a solid movie, though it could’ve been better. In conclusion, Jurassic World Rebirth was my least favorite of our July movie picks.
Superman. Wow. This movie is good. I admit I was a bit hesitant at first about Clark Kent not being Henry Cavill because, in my mind, ‘Cavill is Superman and Superman is Cavill.’ I’m glad to be proven wrong, though. David Corenswet is the Superman I didn’t know I needed. He portrays the OG superhero perfectly, and I’m looking forward to the upcoming installments in the DC universe.
Sore: Istri dari Masa Depan. The best Indonesian movie I’ve ever watched—hands down. The cinematography, music, and plot all worked well. Here’s a photo of me right after we left the cinema—both eyes puffy because the movie had me crying like a baby:
I couldn’t sleep that night because it left me full of emotion. My boyfriend even said it’s the type that makes you think long after it ends. If Sore: Istri dari Masa Depan is released on a global streaming platform, please watch it.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps. There’s something oddly satisfying about the movie’s color grading. I may not be an expert, but I like the way the set design was carefully curated. In my opinion, the casting is spot-on—Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm is amazing! My only gripe is that the plot moves a little too fast, so some scenes feel a bit rushed.
So, how about you? Do you enjoy watching movies too? If you do, this July must’ve felt like a free trip to a chocolate factory.
