A Soul Lost, A Nation in Pain

My country, Indonesia, is currently in need of prayers. On Monday and Thursday this week, the people of Indonesia gathered in protest, voicing our disagreement through demonstrations and calling out the legislative institution for its unreasonable salaries (more than IDR 100 million per person, or approximately USD 6,000) and jet-set lifestyle. For context, the highest regional minimum wage here is only around IDR 5 million (about USD 300), leaving many in poverty.

Last night, during one of the demonstrations, something terrible happened. A tactical police vehicle ran over a ride-share driver, killing him instantly. The crowd swarmed the vehicle, screaming for justice and accountability—but it drove away unharmed.

This is not okay. This is not what our country was meant to become.

I hope you’ll take a moment to grieve with us the loss of a good soul. His name was Affan Kurniawan. Once a security guard, he moved from job to job. At just twenty-one, he had already become the breadwinner for his family. Life had never been easy for him.

On the day of the incident, Affan was simply doing his job, just delivering food to a customer. But fate brought him to a street crossing where that large vehicle kept moving forward. He was run over—small and helpless. The crowd rushed him to the hospital, but it was too late.

Last night, we didn’t just lose a person. We lost a hardworking soul with a future ahead of him. We’re not just mourning a stranger—we’re mourning someone’s son, someone’s brother, someone’s friend, and someone’s hero.

May he rest in peace. May his family find the strength to keep going. May God guide this country toward a better future.

I love our country. I love our nation. I just hope the people in power love it as much as we do.
