Oops… My Sunflower Grew an Extra Petal
See the crocheted sunflower in the cover photo above?
Yup, I made that a couple of days ago—on my eighth day of crocheting.
Honestly? I wasn’t that proud of how it turned out that night. I nitpicked every mistake, especially the fact that I crocheted the yellow yarn into the wrong stitch, which left my sunflower with ten blunt petals instead of nine.
(How the heck did I end up with an extra petal but still manage to make them look pretty even? That’s gotta be magic.)
But being rational (and because I kept crocheting until almost 11 p.m., way past my bedtime), I decided to let my first finished project “sit” overnight.
And it actually worked!
When I woke up the next morning, I saw it differently. Instead of focusing on what was wrong, I looked at my sunflower as a whole and actually appreciated it for everything it represented: a decent outcome for a beginner—proof that Avicii was right: “When there’s a will, there’s a way, kind of beautiful…”
Here are the tutorials I used: the Magic Ring tutorial and the Sunflower tutorial.
Personal Tip: If you’re a beginner and want to try making this sunflower too, I recommend using a brighter color for the disk florets. Dark brown is too tricky—you’ll struggle to see the stitches clearly while counting. Learn from my mistake, guys.
And oh—have I mentioned? Not only have I conquered the tricky, not-magical-at-all magic ring, but I can now make crochet patterns that stay flat (no more curls!).
Here’s to straight hair and perfectly straight crochet!
