The Movies that Made My June

It’s the end of June already, which can only mean two things: a) I’ve spent most of this month neglecting my blog, which is quite outrageous for someone who dreams of becoming a full-time blogger one day; and b) it’s movie wrap-up time!!!

I know, I know. I shouldn’t promise something I’m still not entirely sure about, but since I want to keep myself accountable, I promise I’ll blog more often next month. (Hear that, blog? I’m responsible on and off the page. Ha.)

In the meantime, let’s dive into my reviews of all the movies I watched this month:

Michael. I’m aware that opinions on this biopic seem to be divided into two groups: some think it’s an awesome retelling, while others find it a bit shallow. I could see a part of myself in both camps. I enjoyed the movie for what it showed about the iconic late MJ, but I also felt a little disappointed that it stopped right when things were about to get more interesting.

Also, one thought kept crossing my mind while watching it: stardom is so, so, so lonely. And isolating.

Colony. For starters, it’s not the type of horror movie I struggle to watch since it’s mostly about zombies. I actually think its take on zombies is quite refreshing (“Really, Karina? Zombies are refreshing now?”), though the plot could have benefited from stronger character development.

That said, I still really enjoyed it. It genuinely kept me on the edge of my seat.

(Fun fact: Right after watching Colony, my sister and I went to the restroom while my boyfriend and his friend waited for us near the cinema, overlooking an indoor ice-skating rink.

When we came back, I quietly walked up behind my boyfriend so he wouldn’t notice me. Once I was right behind him, I whispered, “KRUAKKKKK,” just like one of the zombies in Colony.

He jumped.

Oh, how I cherished that moment.)

Disclosure Day. While my boyfriend seems to think Disclosure Day is another artistic masterpiece by Steven Spielberg (he’s a big fan, guys), I have a different opinion. The movie has enough thrills and mystery to keep me engaged, but I don’t think it quite delivered what I was hoping for. I was also a little disappointed that we didn’t get to learn more about the “day” itself.

Still, Emily Blunt is amazing in it. She’s fantastic.

Toy Story 5. If you’re watching Toy Story 5 for the nostalgia, I bet you’ll love it. I, on the other hand, have to shamelessly admit that I haven’t watched the first four movies yet (please don’t hate me). So while I think the movie is great, I wouldn’t call it the best animated movie of the year.

Supergirl. Okay. I’m officially in love with Kara Zor-El. Since I’ve always adored strong female characters, this incredibly powerful Supergirl is absolutely my favorite. Even if the plot feels a bit generic for a superhero movie, I’m still showed up for my girl Kara.

And Milly Alcock portrays her perfectly imperfect.
