My August Watchlist: Movies, Misses, and Takeout with Jake Peralta
If I watched four good movies in July, I only managed half that number this month. It wasn’t bad, but I was so bummed that I missed Freakier Friday. I mean, I had been looking forward to it after seeing the trailer and being reminded of how much I loved the first installment back then. Sadly, the cinema here didn’t show it for more than a week or two. I guess the hype for it wasn’t huge here.
As expected, I also didn’t watch Weapons. The movie is huge here with lots of raving reviews—but I’m a scaredy cat who avoids that kind of thing at all costs! Even if it would keep me on my toes, I’m not about to sacrifice my seven-to-eight hours of beauty sleep for it. (Is this responsibility? I think so. I choose peace over a week of nightmares and unsettling imagery. How responsible of me.)
But still, I couldn’t hold back my curiosity. I read the whole synopsis on Wikipedia and went, “Oooh…” and “Aaaah…” the whole time. That movie is cray-cray (but in a good kind of thriller-movie way).
Well, enough with the chit chat. This long-ass opening narrative will probably make you wonder, “So which movies did this girl actually watch this month?” I’ll make you wait no more. Here are the two movies I went to the cinema for in August:
The Naked Gun. While watching this movie, both my boyfriend and I stared at the screen with jaws wide open at its sheer absurdity. He laughed a lot more than I did, but I still felt entertained. For me, the humor in this movie lies mostly in the dialogue, which might feel vague to a non-English speaker, but can be really funny if you get it. I also loved how unexpected the plot was—especially the living snowman scene (this sentence alone proves my point, doesn’t it?). Those parts just live in my mind rent-free.
Materialists. While I don’t usually like romance without comedy, I watched this one with my boyfriend because he wanted to see the star-studded cast in a romance genre. Our opinions, it turned out, were completely different. My boyfriend said the movie was neither good nor bad, but still enjoyable for its artistic value. I, on the other hand, was bored as hell. One hour in, I started to annoy him by blowing air into his face.
(I might not be the best person to review this movie, but I’ll say this: I genuinely love Dakota’s style here. She looks good in everything!)
P.S. This month, I also got my boyfriend to start watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It has now become a small ritual of ours, where we eat our takeout with Jake Peralta and the gang playing in the background. Rewatching the series is exciting, but seeing my boyfriend enjoy it for the first time feels even better.
So, what did you watch this month? Do tell!
